LIFETIME

Only God knows the length of my lifetime. With His help, I’ve overcome four serious illnesses. Lately, I’ve had some time on my hands to wonder why I keep surviving. I don’t do anything outstanding–make a few family birthday cakes, write my weekly blog and keep Ken daily company.

As I think about it, I believe the common people keep our society going. The sport heroes need their fans, entertainers need their audiences and elected officials need their voters.

A few years ago, the world was worried about over-population. China was limiting the number of babies a couple could have.

Right now, young people in the U.S. aren’t marrying and having children in the numbers they did in the past. Society is shrinking because of it–there is a larger percentage of old people. There will be a dearth of employees in the future. We need fix-it people as well as college professors. We are helpless when a plumbing pipe is stopped up or an electric fixture doesn’t work.

Together, Ken and I get along fine with a little assist from our children. We’re fortunate that they both live in our area.

For years, I’ve had a guilty feeling when I drive by the cemetery on Hwy. 75 just west of Harrison. A good friend, Sandy, is buried there. She died in her 40’s. She missed so much of life that I have enjoyed. I’ve seen my children settled in their own homes. I’ve helped raise two grandchildren and watched them take their place as adults in the community.

Many of our friends are gone. Going to funerals and celebrations of life have become a part of our social calendar.

I remember WWII. The few remaining vets are past 100 years of age. They watched buddies be killed at eighteen.

Do you ever wonder why you are still alive?
